Is the treadmill a viable alternative for outside running?
Well most of the persons that did both types of exercises will say yes. Running on a treadmill is not the same thing as running outside but in the same time is not so different.
Many persons than don’t like the treadmill will say that running outside is harder because you encounter different types of soil and inclines. Well, this is very true but in the same time on a treadmill you can change the incline and most of the treadmills come with built in workouts that will simulate hills or famous races like Boston Marathon. So this is not a solid argument to dismiss the treadmill workouts.

Also when is about different surfaces: Running on concrete or other harder surfaces can produce joint injuries. Treadmill has a big plus here because it comes with cushion systems that are designed to maximum protection. Also, most of the latest cushioning system can be adjusted to give you a harder or a softer feel.
The biggest advantage of the treadmill running versus outside training is the fact that you can program the workouts. You can do hill climbing, speed tracks or interval exercises because you can adjust the speed ir incline of these machines. If you train outside you have to find a place that can offer all of these which is almost impossible.
Another big advantage is the fact that you don’t have to post pone your training if is raining or is too cold.Training indoor with a treadmill has also a big disadvantage. Many people get bored and they have to auto stimulate with music, TV or other collateral activities.
Running outside is more fun but in the same time it is a limited if you want to do various exercises. Treadmill workouts can be boring for some persons but in the same time offer a great variety of workouts. In the end treadmill training is a very solid alternative to running.
